29th December 2001: The Wolfenstein 3D Dome opens
Here’s a message from Tris:

The Wolfenstein 3D Dome Opens!

And you never thought you would see hell freeze over… It’s official! Brian Lowe and I announce today that The Wolfenstein 3D Dome, a joint website eventually replacing “Mr. Lowe’s Homepage” and “TFS”, has opened it’s doors at it’s domain: http://www.wolfenstein3d.co.uk/. Special attention to you is asked because with this grand opening you can win yourself a prize.

We thought it would be nice to have a little contest. A wallpaper contest, that is. If you have a touch of Monèt in your veins, make (a) wallpaper(s) that uses textures from Wolfenstein. Screenshots of you playing, an edited existing shot, grabs from add-ons, VSWAP/VGAGRAPH images, RTCW images, just think up something. Do whatever you want with your own Wolfenstein 3-D wallpaper to make it stand out, just until you think your wallpaper is thè masterpiece and upload-ready.

No contest without a prize — if you win, you’ll receive a video of Hitler’s Third Reich: Blitzkrieg over Poland and the Wolfenstein 3D Hintbook. Plus a secret prize not even noted on the Dome. So it IS worth to enter the contest!

Winning is simple. After we get in at least 30 wallpapers or the contest ends at the 1st of February 2002, it’s time for everyone to vote for their favourite wallpaper by mail.

And what’s more, there’s also a ‘Wolf3D Mansion style’ EZBoard Forum. You can post stuff there too. Feel free to send comments to brian@brlowe.globalnet.co.uk .

I would personally like to thank all who helped for your dedicated support, criticism, and enthusiasm through the many ups and downs in the development of the Wolfenstein 3-D Dome.

Tris.

MCS and I have finally finished Spear Resurrection (it’s actually a sequel to the original Spear of Destiny, but we called it Spear Resurrection for copyright reasons). It’s available for download from our site at AReyeP’s Wolfenstein 3D. It took a lot of time to make this TC, but we think it’s been worthwhile.

Also, we’re running a competition with it – the highest score achieved by Christmas will receive a collection of original wall and sprite graphics that didn’t make it into Spear Resurrection, plus they’ll receive a special “editor’s” edition of the game. There’s a second prize also. Details are at our website.

Steve Walley.

14th November 2001: Heil Hitler!!! released
Here’s news I received from Sam Feichter…

Hiya All – It’s been a while since I have talked, but with all this stupid homework, I have no time. Well, newly released is my demo of “Heil Hitler!”. Please e-mail me what you think of it!

Well, I have made some awesome discoveries!

First, I am making my first ever WORKING Doom II TC! It’s called Castle of Doom. It’s about the Doom Marine ending up in Hell to save his kids from a giant castle, which has other castles, towers, sewers, labs, and caves within it! It uses stuff from Unreal, Wolfenstein (maybe), Ultimate Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and other stuff. The music is awesome! The opening level sure looks cool, and is hard since you start out with a pistol in front of many Baron’s of Hell!!!

Another discovery is one that all you Wolfenstein fans have been waiting for! It converts Wolfenstein levels to Doom! Unfortunately, Doom has only 30-40 levels, and Wolf has 60. You will have to split it up. And it comes with a thing that has the walls from wolfenstein, and puts them in the wad! Now, you can make YOUR add-ons onto Doom levels, and easily edit it using DeHacked!

It’s on the Doom GL page on Doomworld under Source Modifications. You need something that can handle RAR and ARJ files, though…

Well, that’s all for now.

Sam

Thanks Sam for the above info. Here’s a pic I made from the opening level of Heil Hitler. The demo has 5 levels.

This means Project Verdammt will not be released to BETA testers till at least January and will not be released till Late January.

There is also some other problems (which are being helped with) for Coding, and I may be adding some coding from OP: Zusammenkunft (which Phillip Luy said he would post up or tell me about, but I don’t want all of their features).

Also, a Note to BETA testers, please mail me if you want to , but I won’t be able to send the game to you until around Jan. But still please ask.

Thats about it for Project Verdammt.

– James”

Here’s a quote from Fred Kenny…

“In this one the TERRORISTS have disguised themselves as WWII German soldiers.

28th September 2001: The Heinmakker Project released
Bobby Bucksnort has released The Heinmakker Project. There are five new levels and a number of graphics, sounds and source code changes. Bobby worked on this with his late grandfather John, and it’s turned out to be a very good set.

28th September 2001: WolfUSA released
Fred Kenny has released yet another new VSWAP to go with the maps from Wolffred. (The new maps were on episode three). This one is called WolfUSA, and is meant as a tribute to those who perished in the recent terrorist tragedies in the USA. It looks quite effective at first, however, as all the walls have the same red, white and blue colours, they can become quite monotonous after a while.

As with Fred’s earlier sets, the full version of Wolf 3D is needed to play this one.

27th September 2001: The Thirteenth Floor released
The Thirteenth Floor is a new add-on for the full version of Wolf 3D. There are 6 new levels, including the secret one. If you like mazes, then you’ll like this set as there’s quite a few here. No new graphics and sounds but the author plans to update these, and include many other features, in an upcoming set (see the text file for more info).

You can download it at Wolf 3D Disaster Zone. Requires the full version of Wolf 3D to play.

23rd September 2001: Palettes and FloEdit
Matt Dadi has asked Florian Stöhr (creator of FloEdit) about a program to convert the palettes from Corridor 7, Operation: Body Count, Blake Stone, etc to Wolf 3D. Florian has said he’d check it out when time allows, so maybe we’ll have this feature in FloEdit. Thanks Matt for this info.

For Mac users, my Mac/links page has been updated. Four new links have been added, and four taken out.

16th September 2001: R.I.P. John Bucksnort
The Wolf3D community suffered a huge loss yesterday with the sad news that John Bucksnort has passed away. John and I exchanged many emails during the last few years and we became very good friends. John loved making add-ons and provided us with so many good ones. We will all miss him very much. My condolences go to John’s grandson Bobby Bucksnort and his family in what must be a very difficult time for them. Bobby told me he intends to carry on John’s good work, and I feel sure everyone will support him in this.

16th September 2001: The Last Floor released
Pablo Dictter has released one last level for Wolf3D episode 2 called The Last Floor. Though it’s only one level, it is a good one.

Tris has started Neophytes of Wolf and Spear. Hopefully, it’ll be 4th time lucky for this new Yahoo Club. As many of you may know, the first three Neophyte clubs were deleted by one of the founders or by somebody knowing the password of one of the founders. Good luck with this one Tris!!

John Bucksnort has released the first part of his latest Spear add-on So You Wanna Be an Assassin?. There are three new well designed levels, plus many graphics, sounds and source code changes. 8th September 2001: WDOS update
Here’s an email from WDOS (now Ion Blade)…

Hello all!

I have got a lot of news.

First, now I’m not WDOS, now I’m Ion Blade.

Second, why I didn’t send anything for long time. My e-mail server now can’t send mails to Wolfenstein 3D News.

Third, I’ve done 80% of Operation: Prison Runner (beta 0.10). Previous betas (0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) weren’t public.

Fourth, I need two kinds of help: help with sounds and music, and help with source code: where is code of opening locked doors. My mail: wdos@narod.ru.

Goodbye.

-Ion Blade

P.S. if wdos@narod.ru won’t work, send the mail to ion_blade@mail.ru.

Thanks for the above info, Ion Blade. Good luck with the project.

2nd September 2001: Fredwolf released
Fred Kenny has released Fredwolf. This is basically Fred’s Wolffred set with new wall designs, but the feel of the game has changed entirely. The futuristic atmosphere has been replaced with a fun type one. The maps are as in Wolffred, ie – new levels on episode three with some alterations to the other episodes.

As with the earlier set, the full version of Wolf 3D is needed to play this one.

ps – that new gun is an AUTOMATIC-GERMAN MAGNUM.

But, in my news, Heil Hitler! is being edited right now. Episode 1 will be completed soon. Gorenstein 2 is being held back until my source code is finished. (James….)

Visit my site at:

Fred Kenny has released Wolffred. There are 10 new levels on episode three which I helped Fred complete. All episodes have been included because they’ve all been changed in some way by Fred, particularly episode one. The graphics are mainly from Astrostein and WolfNuck, though several of the actors come from other sources:

  • Guards – Wolfkkk
  • White Guards – Eat At Joes
  • Mutants – Xmaswolf
  • SS Officers – WolfenDoom

The Machine gun is from Wolfnuck, and the chaingun is the WAND from Eat at Joe’s. The two lowest treasures are from Astrostein, and the crowns have been changed to the former 1ups.

Credit is given to the authors of the sets mentioned.

The full version of Wolfenstein 3D is needed to play this set.

5th August 2001: Source Code Chat
Here’s a message from Tris…

Seeing that the previous chat didn’t work out the way it should and I kept getting problems logging in – I think I didn’t make it in right – I’ve decided to do a new chat. On Monday the 6th of August 2001 there’ll be a new Source Code Chat again at http://www.gebweb.co.uk/chat.htm.

The problems yesterday with the chat server are now resolved, and we have a better looking, easier-to-read chatroom too!

Here are the times (a little earlier so everyone can go there without momma shouting it’s bedtime 😉

  • Holland/Norway: 14:00 Midday
  • United Kingdom: 13:00 Midday
  • Australia : 22:00 Evening
  • America: Pennsylvania Area and up to Queen Elizabeth Islands: 9:00 Morning
  • America: Memphis Area and up to Devon Island: 8:00 Morning
  • America: Wyoming Area and up to Canada: 7:00 Morning

I see that some of you need to get up early, but then… it’ll be worth it. Plus you will then have the whole day to get up to your code.

Rules: You are allowed to ask personal questions. We WON’T speak about the deletion of the Neophyte clubs. It’s done. We don’t have a suspect or whatsoever. It’s over. OK? Secondly, you ARE allowed to ask about stuff that’s in an unreleased add-on. That’s okay. Plus, I’m counting on you ALL to come!

In short:

1. NO SWEARING AND/OR FLOODING

2. NO EXCESSIVE USE OF CAPITALS

3. NO TALK ABOUT THE DELETIONS OF NEOPHYTE OR ANY

SUSPICIONS

Here’s another set, this one is brand new and is by Bernt Hansen. It’s called Fearwolf. 5th August 2001: Wolffred announced

Features:

  • Seamless Level Flow

  • Armour Added (* Bug)
  • Border colour is light grey
  • No PC-13 or “Press a Key Screen”
  • A background Pic
  • Lighting effect

  • Blood Splatters Effect

  • New Sprites, and bo_items added to the engine (for people who decide to use my game as a base or change the code)

James needs help with the following…

* If you press ESC and go back to the game, you can’t see the armour status until you get shot.

** How to make the Pac Man’s Blockable Obj’s.

Also,

Have Explodable/Breakable Obj’s.

18th June 2001: Megastein 3-D announced
Viper sent me the following info about his Megastein 3-D series…

Chapter One, The Road to Despair, is coming along nicely. I have 15½ levels done, the ½ being the incomplete Map15 (Prison Admin). Map15 will be more elaborate than many other levels. It has several styles:

Cell area: Desolate and messed-up looking, with gibs on the floor, water spilled everywhere, and wells for P.O.Ws to drink from filled with blood and gore. Walls are SoD Lost Episodes blue stone and jail cell textures.

Offices, living quarters, etc.

Neat and well-lit hallways with fancy decor. Walls of multicolored brick and the occasional spray-painted graffiti sign that reads “Reid Muß Sterben! (more on that later)” Offices and living quarters themselves may be messy. Higher-ranking officers choose their own decorations in an office, so you may see a cow carcass placed neatly in a corner. Bathrooms have those pretty gray walls that I added. Toilets look like the toilets from your home (this is the future, but not the future future). Probably the best-looking area of the level.

Basement storage

Neglected, abandoned-looking place. Has vines, cobwebs, etc. Walls are the nice dark gray stoner slab texture from Project Totengraeber. Little lighting.

I have decided to release the storyline. Here it is:

It is 2012. 6 years ago, Prof. Wilhelm Uberkopf and his neo-Nazis took over Germany and established a dictatorship. He immediately declared war on every country on the face of the Earth that would not ally with him and World War III began. The Allies have been doing well. Until now.

You are William Reid, a tank pilot. 3 days ago, you were captured while snooping around the Nazi fortress of Totenhaus (Dead House) trying to collect info on Sebastian Krist’s Operation Totenkrieg, It was rumored that POWs were brought from Totenhaus to Krist’s labs down a road known as the Road to Despair. At Krist’s bunker, they were killed and raised from the dead as three-armed zombies. Soldiers that have died in battle are also zombified. Not only will Uberkopf have a nearly unlimited supply of goons, the zombies attack with no concern for their own lives and fight until dead. If Krist’s project is succesful, the Allies are doomed. Worse than the regular zombies are Eisenmanner (Iron Men), huge 4-armed zombies with Gatling weapons in their chests. Capable of taking 70 bullets, one of these could wipe out a whole platoon of regular troops or even a tank!

You must escape from Totenhaus and stop Krist at all costs.

NOTE: 3 labs are in Totenhaus. You must destroy them. They are at Map05, Map13, and Map20.

The new enemy sprites that will be in future releases wouldn’t be there if Benjamin Blaufarb hadn’t released them for download.

More info from James Ingham on Project Verdammt !! James is working on something in the code which makes you:

  • Have the Knife, but when you pic up the chainsaw you can’t use the Knife again (unless you die) (Like DooM)
  • Have a Pistol, but when you pic up a new one you get Dual Pistols (Same as Other One: Unless you die)
  • Ditto that for Other Guns!

Also, James is trying to get the Chainsaw to need Petrol Cans (Separate ammo type) so every now and again you need to pick up a new one (Petrol Can)!!!

13th June 2001: From Schabb’s Hand released
From Schabb’s Hand is a four level set (including the secret level) by Pablo Dictter which plays as episode two of the original Wolfenstein 3D.

The levels are well designed and nicely decorated. The set could easily be called episode two – part two, and would certainly please those who prefer original graphics. You can get it from Pablo’s Place – Wolfenstein Site. Requires the original full version of Wolfenstein 3D.

Viper has sent me the following pic from his set The Road To Despair…

8th June 2001: Heil Hitler!!! announced
News I just received from Sam Feichter…

Hey all!

I am making a new game, which is going to be easily one of the best I have made! I don’t know about source code changes yet, but it’s cool.

The name is Heil Hitler!!!. It is a three episode game in which you have to chase Hitler through hordes of Gestapo soldiers, rabid dogs, and the new Armored Schabbs!

Also will be Hitler’s Bodyguard, which is the “code name” for Hitler’s invention of a robot, using those nifty mecha suit things that he and Schabbs (in this game) wear, except that it’s silver. Hitler’s is still cyan.

News on Gorenstein:

I am waiting on the source code before I start editing again. I heard from James, the one who is compiling it, that the missle launcher will not work anymore, and that he can do a non-projectile weapon, and he can do the text still.

News on Hall of the Nazis:

The graphics are coming along.

News on Cowboys:

I cancelled this project.

Well, until the next episode,

Sam

8th June 2001: The Road to Despair
The Road to Despair has been around for some time, but I had difficulties in downloading it until now. It’s by Viper, and has 8 new levels which play as an add-on to Project Totengraeber. 2nd June 2001: Wolfenstein 3-D Awards winners
Here’s news of the 2001 Official Wolfenstein 3-D Awards:

On top of the three categories that were on the poll, there are four other awards. The winners have received trophy banners for their sites.

2001 Wolfenstein Awards – (6/2/01)

BEST ADD-ON: Project Totengraeber – Brian Rowan

BEST CREATOR: Mr. Lowe

BEST PAGE: Mr. Lowe’s Page – Brian E. Lowe

Extra Categories

BEST CODER: Tris – TFS

BEST NEW SITE: James’ Site – James Ingham

BEST CLASSIC: Schabbs 2000 – Gary Ragland

I am particularly pleased about the ‘Extra Category’ awards. Tris put a lot of effort into his TFS set, and James’ site is the best I’ve seen for some time. And had Kenny’s site been remodelled a few months earlier, he could well have had the ‘best website’ award. Anyways, here’s the awards I received…

27th May 2001: Veteran’s Wolf Site
Here’s a new Wolf 3D site from a veteran Wolf 3D fan!! It’s at Veteran Wolf’s Site, and has downloads, projects and links.

Jean Morel tells me he’s cancelled his two projects The Wolfenstein 3D Shareware:SE and Project: Nein, but is now thinking of creating an add-on called Escape From Kolnitz: A True Story. He will also be hosting a new Wolfenstein Site, called The Wolf’s Stone.

I guess I missed this earlier, but to celebrate Wolf 3D’s 9th birthday, Planet Romero has a number of pics from the early years. Another site of interest is the Official S&F Prod. Home Page. It’s not Wolf 3D specific, but has cheats, mods, add-ons and much more for many Apogee/ID games. There’s an old graphics only add-on there for the shareware 1.0 version called Wolfwall (pic shown opposite) which adds a lot more gore, and some new wall designs. I’ve posted an all files included version. No new maps. Thanks to Frenkel Smeijers for the above info.

27th May 2001: Gorenstein 2 update
Here’s more updates from Sam Feichter…

Hey!

Gorenstein 2 is going under some stuff for BETA 2. Still a 5 level demo, it will have a complete episode of the 6 done in about 2 weeks (which is when James Ingham is done with the source code he is doing for me).

I have put in the graphics for a missile launcher, and James is doing the source code changes for it, since whenever I mess with it, I accidentily screw it up, or delete the whole damn folder!

Well, anyway, there is a lot of cool new things in my two current games:

Hall of the Nazis

  • Chainsaw! (Sorry, still behaves like a knife)
  • Guys converted from Laz’s Wolfendoom scenarios (if I’m breaking any rules he has for it, I am sorry, but they look so neat!)
  • Mutants with red blood (At least I haven’t seen it anywhere!)
  • One-armed Mancubus!
  • Pewter statue of original guard! (If you’ve seen the one on id’s site, you know what I’m talking about!)

Gorenstein 2

  • Instead of fireballs from the flame-throwing guard, it shoots actual flames!
  • A new knife (No! Not just changing the colors, I mean a buck knife!) Bet you’ve never seen a gargoyle in any Wolfenstein game!
  • Goldeneye weapons! (If James showed you his, I sent those to him)
  • BJ has a new dying frame! (He doesn’t have black eyes and looks like an onion anymore – he just spurts blood!)

Check out Sam’s Wolfenstein 3-D Page for the latest 5 level Gorenstein 2 download!!

26th May 2001: Project Verdammt Demo released
James Ingham has released a one level demo version of his upcoming set Project Verdammt. Here’s some info he sent me…

There are 4 Weapons:

  • Knife — Not Rapid Fire — Go close up to them to kill!
  • Handgun — Not Rapid Fire — Aim and shoot!
  • ChainGun — Rapid Fire — Just Shoot and move from side to side!
  • Chain Saw — Rapid Fire — Go close up to them to kill! (Like a rapid fire Knife which does as much damage as a chaingun!)

I got the graphics for the chain saw from doom! But i edited it so it looked like B.J’s Hands. Please note: ‘I Don’t want any other add-on with my chainsaw images unless they have my permission, or there’ll be bad comments about it on my site!!!

There are other features like:

  • 200% Health Max
  • 250 Ammo Max
  • 300 Lives Max
  • No Parameter Needed – just press Tab+?
  • Green Main Menu Background

In version 1.0 there’ll be:

  • God Mode Artifact,
  • New Status Bar (i.e at the moment it’s like this:

________________________________________________

|Floor|Score|<BJFACE>|HEALTH|AMMO|KEYS|WEAPON|

—————————————————————-

But it will be like this:

_____________________________________________

|Ammo|Health|<BJFACE>|Score|Lives|WEAPON|Keys|

————————————————————

  • Maybe a new (few) Weapons, (Maybe a rocket Launcher)
  • Armour (Maybe)
  • 60 Continuous Levels
  • Read Me Files Used (HelPArt+ENDTEXT)
  • My Recorded demo’s (Maybe)
  • Different Music
  • A whole bunch of new graphics
  • New Status Bar Graphics (From Doom)
  • New Characters
  • No PC-13 Sign
  • No M-L+I Cheat( Probably different Letters)
  • No Cheats at all!!!!!

And a load more!!!!!! (alot ain’t it)

Also, I might: This is a big Maybe!!! On the status bar i might have a line saying info, where when a Grey Guard come it would say ‘GUARD APPROACHING’ or something like that! And when you pick up some ammo it would say 25 Ammo Clip Picked Up! etc…

– James

Thanks James for providing the above info. One other point – the demo’s main purpose is to show the new features, particularly the chain saw. As such, most of the level design is pretty basic.

24th May 2001: Chemical Reaction released
For those who prefer the original graphics and sounds, here’s a set of four new Spear levels by Pablo Dictter called Chemical Reaction. The levels are well designed and the decoration is about right. The original full version of Spear of Destiny is required.

A bad thing happened on Saturday. My computer crashed. That means that Gorenstein II is postponed. Anyone who wants to help with levels and GFX and sounds, PLEASE DO!

Well, at least Project Verdammt isn’t gone, since it’s on Mike Ingham’s computer. (Did you know that I was helping?) Gorenstein will NOT be cancelled though. I might be set back a little. (Ok! Maybe a lot!)

For you Doom II owners out there, have you played Goldeneye Doom II? Regardless if you have or have not, download the EDGE version! The difference is more weapons (DK5, AR33, Dostovei, PP7 (unsilenced)). GET IT AT DOOM WAD STATION!!!

Bye all,

Sam

Hi, I’m the webmaster of Fortress Wolfenstein.

It’s a french-speaking site about the Wolfenstein series (Wolf3D, SOD and Return to Castle Wolfenstein).

In my website, you can find all the news about Return to Castle Wolfenstein (29 screenshots available – some of them have been sent to me directly by Activision France, fully translated interviews of creators and good articles, downloadable movies, etc…) – all that is in the “Wolf3D2” section.

Also available is news about the Wolf3D creators and community (for example : the Wolf3D2 – which later became Rise Of The Triad – design project, available on the 3DRealms website, and also news scripts from generalist sites, .plan files and news from Wolf3D creators and their current games – Doom 3 for John Carmack, Daikatana for John Romero, etc…, and lots of other things) – all that is in the “News” section.

There are french-speaking descriptions of Wolf3D and SOD enemies, objects, weapons (with self-created animated gifs), translated version of the Read This! and the episodes end screens of the game, lots of files to download, a soon-available tutorial to edit the source code, websites URL where fans can buy Wolf3D and SOD, lots of links, lots of original music and sounds midi and mp3 files to listen and download, all the cheatcodes, etc…

Expect this set in 1 to 2 months.

Paal Olstad (Poet) sent me the following email:

Hello.

For those who are interested I have posted several source code tutorials lately. More will be added soon.

Some time ago I also posted a special version of my first set Wolf-Extra. This version includes all the big levels and a selection of small ones.

The special version benefited from a few source code changes, but… BY A VERY UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCE THE WL_GAME.C FILE USED TO COMPILE THIS VERSION WAS WRONG, THE CONSEQUENCE BEING THAT THE SECRET LEVELS WERE WRONGLY PLACED. This is now corrected. I am very sorry for the inconvenience this must have caused those who have played this version of Wolf-Extra. Please download it again!!.

Lastly a set called Wolf Hour Epilogue will be posted shortly.

Best regards Paal Olstad (Poet).

Thanks Paal, for the info. Paal’s page is at Poet’s Wolfenstein Page.

The levels are very different to the Buzzbomb ones – most have more open space. There are too many objects in one area at times, particularly on the first level, resulting in occasional loss of graphics, but there’s some good design ideas too.

16th March 2001: WarZone I: Sudden Strike released
DTrade has released Warzone I: Sudden Strike. There are nine new levels, plus a secret level. There are also a number of graphics and other changes. 2nd March 2001: Chokage updated
Chris Chokan has released an updated version of Chokage, with changes made to several levels. Some of Chris’ favourite level changes include:

  • E3L4 (Black Sunshine)*
  • E3L6 (The Self-Inducing Barrier)*
  • E3L3 (Cubical Containment… not quite done yet though)*
  • E2L1 (Pilot’s Warning… some parts of the level are really cool while others need touching up)
  • E2L3 (The Tower)

*these levels contain a hidden Skeleton Key that are found in unlikely, bizarre ways

Some other classic levels that Chris has upgraded include:

  • E1L1-E1L4 (L2 and L3’s secret areas have been majorly extended, L4 has new wall photos in the brown area)
  • E2L5 (Ice Age)

Chris is still working on changes, and the next one will be really weird: “you get to a certain spot in the level and when you go back… everything is different. There’s an example of what this will look like hidden in a secret passage on E5L2 in the Gold shine area with the backwards guard”.

The level will also feature doors that open poles (and other doors). An example of this is on on E3L7 inside the secret room with the dog behind the 5 poles.

Other changes are that the Blue SS Guards will become Nazi Reepers. Officers will become Speedopes (swimmers), and the dogs will become Chainsaw Dogs that float through the air.

More info, and the download is available from Herc’s Super Chokage Page.

2nd March 2001: Help wanted
The Master is looking for an artist to help out with his upcoming Wolfenstein mod Kurt vs. The Master.

“The artist needs to be willing to do major boss & other enemy (not any of the normal guards that have a bunch of frames like the Brownies, SS, etc.) recreation, possibly from scratch, and maybe some various other wall textures and things. And they have to be GOOD. They need to send some examples.

They can email me at: pepsip@iol-12.net

Thanks.

The Master.”

2nd March 2001: Fortune City downtime update

6th February 2001: AReyeP e-mails CEO of id Software on the question of copyright infringement
In an email to AReyeP, Todd Hollenshead (CEO of ID Software) has clarified ID’s position on what it considers acceptable use of the Wolf 3D Source Code.

Here are the questions that AReyeP asked Todd…

Q1: Obviously the distribution of the original game files is an infringement of copyright, and is akin to distribution of stolen goods. What I really need to know is id’s stance in relation to stand alone total conversions that feature new weapons/sounds/graphics etc? The problem here is that in order to make such an add on, nearly every file (exe, graphics files and sound files) in the original game has to be altered.

  • Todd’s reply to above: As long as it is truly a TOTAL conversion, then that is all covered by the GPL (the source code license) and it’s perfectly acceptable. The problem lies when people make a new .exe and distribute some or all of the old id files – that’s basically the same thing as warezing it. – tsh

Q2: It seems that id share a close relationship with the huge number of fans creating mods/total conversions etc for newer games such as Doom, Quake etc. I’ve played many Doom/Quake/Quake2 mods/total conversions, many freely available off PC Gaming magazines, and made by devoted fans. Most of them feature graphics/music etc from the original games, but all give due credit to the fact that they are indeed utilising the copyright property of id software (or whoever else depending on the game). Some have been “stand alone” games (or total conversions), others have been simple add ons or levels, and some have been just plain weird! I’m hoping there’s no problem with people making similar things in relation to Wolfenstein. I’m hoping you can clarify for me what is acceptable, and what is not.

  • Todd’s reply: We encourage people to play with the Wolf3D engine, which is why John released it. And we don’t mind people making “add-ons” or new levels for the full registered version of Wolf3D or Spear. My email to Nate was specific to what he was doing, which was not only a violation of the End User License Agreement, but copyright infringement. As far as everyone else, if they haven’t received an email from me and they’re not doing exactly what Nate was doing then they’re not in any trouble. – tsh

Many thanks to both AReyeP (Steve) and Todd for this info.

6th February 2001: Westlake II released
DTrade has just released his second set Westlake II. There are seven difficult levels, with a lot of pushwalls to find. There are also many graphics and source code changes too. Here’s a pic…

6th February 2001: Wolfenstein Death Match Multiplayer
Jay has been working on a Wolfenstein Death Match Multiplayer. Almost all gameplay aspects are finished – walking, turning, running, opening doors & secrets, shooting, frag counting, dying and respawning – all work simultaneously for 2 players (only picking up items & random spawn spots are left to do). The graphics and sprites are also finished, and the levels are almost completed.

The project was delayed a lot because of a few major bugs, so the source code needed an overhaul, but things are smooth again. If you like the screenshot shown above, you’ll find more of them here. Thanks to Jay and Tris for providing this info.

3rd February 2001: The Greinholdt Covenant Part One released
John Bucksnort has released The Greinholdt Covenant Part One. The set has 8 new fast moving levels, with many source code and graphics changes. There will be further sets in this series later.

3rd February 2001: Nate Smith accused of copyright infringement
The Wolfenstein 3D community suffered a huge blow last night when Nate Smith received an email from ID Software CEO Todd Hollenshead. Todd asked for Nate’s three Beyond Wolfenstein sets to be deleted due to copyright reasons. I have taken off the sets from my sites. ID Software has now clarified its position on what it considers acceptable use of the source code – see Feb 6 news item.

I just received the following letter from Todd Hollenshead, CEO of Id Software:

“Nayt,

Your site at: http://wolf3d.gamehosts.com/bw/index2.shtml and the games entitled “Beyond Wolfenstein” and “Beyond Wolfenstein 2” that are distributed from it are real problems from a copyright and trademark standpoint.

You need to cease distribution of all id content from your site immediately unless you have a specific license for redistribution of such material. You also need to inform other sites which “mirror” your files section to remove the files and cease future downloads as soon as possible.

I understand that you’re a fan of the games, which is really the only reason you’re not getting a real nasty letter from me or our lawyers right now. I think you must be confused as to what is permitted with respect to distribution of our property and specifically the Wolf 3D engine.

Succinctly, we have publicly released the *source code* to Wolfenstein 3D. We have not released any of the art or other game media. Redistribution of such media is copyright infringement. Using the “ID” logo and “Wolfenstein 3D”, both of which are registered trademarks, with such redistribution constitutes trademark infringement. The sounds that you are distributing also most likely infringe on the copyrights of Bobby Prince, the creator and owner of such sounds.

These are all very serious issues which can’t be over looked just because you aren’t charging for the game or didn’t intend anyone harm, etc.

Please contact me via return email immediately and confirm that you will immediately cease distribution of “Beyond Wolfenstein”, “Beyond Wolfenstein 2”, and any other project that contains our intellectual property and that you will instruct any site that mirrors your files to also cease such distribution.

Please note that nothing herein shall constitute a waiver of any potential remedy available to Id Software, Inc., and as such, we reserve all rights and remedies available to us at law or otherwise.

Sincerely,

Todd Hollenshead
CEO
id Software, Inc.”

22nd January 2001: Untergehende Traum (Crumbling Dream) announced

Here’s news of an upcoming 20 level set called Untergehende Traum (Crumbling Dream). It’s being co-ordinated by Tris and there are 9 members thus far involved in this new project. Here’s a pic…

HISTORY:

Notes by Tris

After completing TFS, I played around with an idea to make the spirit a little higher in the Wolfenstein Community. I believed it was time for something new, but I couldn’t figure out what. Then my dad gave me the idea to start up a group project. As I believe now, I’m now the coordinator of the project. Untergehende Traum, which means Crumbling Dream, will be a 20-level TC with level and graphics design close to the original Wolfenstein, be it more realistic. So far there are 9 members:

  • ~Chad~
  • Samuel Chiang
  • Steve Walley (AReyeP)
  • Eric Vaughn
  • Kenny Riley
  • Leo Bourbeau (I believe, I don’t know his last name)

And me, of course. As you see, there still aren’t enough members. So everyone who’d like to, mail to Tris@yahoo.com! Provide in detail with what you could help out, and when you can begin. Note: Everyone who mails me, will automatically be a member, don’t worry.

THE STORY:

Spring, 1945.

The Nazi war machine, once an all conquering force sweeping through Europe, is on its knees as the Allied forces penetrate the German Fatherland.

The Allied High Command, confident that their current rate of advance through German territory will see Berlin fall in the coming weeks, prepares to put the plans for their final assault into action. The sense of urgency, so prevalent in the days when the Reich had the upper hand, has subsided. Though caution must be exercised, and all available force utilised, the Allies know victory is at hand.

Or is it?

You are William Joseph “B.J.” Blazkowicz, terminal action seeker and hero of the Allied cause. Your exploits during the war are the stuff that legends are made of. Capturing the “Spear of Destiny”, and thereby denying Hitler a decided psychological advantage when the Reich was at its peak.

Escaping from Castle Wolfenstein and eliminating key members of the Nazi hierarchy in the process, including the maniacal Dr. Schabbs. You’d even assaulted Hitler’s own stronghold, and taken on who you had believed was Adolf himself, but the cunning Fuhrer, resourceful as ever, had substituted a double in his place. Still, to say you’d put a dent in the Nazi’s schemes was an understatement.

As the end of the war appears imminent, the somewhat “relaxed” attitude adopted by many of the Allied hierarchy has not escaped your attention. Concerned that this matter needs to be addressed, you have arranged to meet with the top Allied boy himself, Commander in Chief of Allied Forces, General Henry Lee Jackson, stationed in a fortified bunker not far from liberated Paris.

As you enter the General’s office, you snap to attention and salute. “Ahhh, B.J. Blazkowicz,” acknowledges the General. Pointing to a seat, he adds, “Sit down, my boy, sit down…” As you take your seat, the General lights a cigar, and, puffing thoughtfully, asks: “Now B.J., what is it I can do for you?”

“General Jackson,” you reply, “I’m concerned that overconfidence could create a problem in these final weeks. I was just wanting to seek your assurance that you’d ensure there is absolutely no let up whatsoever in the aggressiveness of the Allied attacks until this war is over.”

The General smiled. “Thank you for your concern, B.J., but rest assured, all is under control”. “General”, you replied, “with all due respect, you’ve only been in command for just under a month now. It’s not like you’ve been running this invasion from day one, you know…”

An impatient look came over the General’s face. “B.J.”, he said, “You needn’t concern yourself with this. I can assure you that, since I took command after General Ridley was poisoned last month, Allied Command is more alert than ever”.

“Well, that’s good to hear. Still, with my experience behind enemy lines, I was thinking that maybe I should infiltrate Berlin and ascertain what resistance our boys are likely to encounter”.

“Do you think we are incompetent?” snapped the General. “We know the enemy movements, what’s left of them, better than they probably do themselves. No incursion by you will be of any help at all, B.J., besides, you’ve already done enough to help the Allied cause. You’d only be interfering. In other words, I’m giving you an order, B.J., stay out of it. I can assure you that victory will be ours!”

Accepting the General’s response, you stand back to attention, salute, and bid him farewell.

As you leave the office, General Jackson stubs out his cigar. “Damn you Blazkowicz,” he muttered quietly to himself. “I wish eliminating you could be as easy as poisoning Ridley had been”. He turned to face the plans on the table opposite. Plans he’d carefully prepared for the last few weeks since he’d taken command.

Ahh, yes, the Fuhrer would be pleased. The Allied armies were walking straight into a beautifully prepared ambush. General Henry Lee Jackson, a loyal Nazi better known to the Fuhrer by his birth name of Heinrich Jäger, had worked hard for the Reich in attaining the position of Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces. Years of pretending to be loyal to the Allied dogs had been difficult. But the rewards were not far away.

“Yes, B.J.,” he muttered to himself again, “I didn’t lie to you. Victory WILL be ours. Not yours, but OURS! Heil Hitler!”

The General’s biggest mistake, though, was allowing you, B.J. Blazkowicz, to leave. Something just didn’t seem right. You couldn’t quite put a finger on it. But you knew you couldn’t sit back and ignore it.

Damn what the General had ordered. You’d made up your mind. Looks like it was time for B.J. to pay Uncle Adolf a visit to make sure the Allied armies weren’t going to receive a nasty reception!

2 Days Later:

Berlin – Hitler’s bunker:

The message expected from General “Jackson” had finally arrived. As a result, following direct orders from the Fuhrer, German forces positioned themselves strategically around the Reichstag and surrounding areas to greet the unsuspecting Allied armies. The ambush they had prepared would be devastating.

The last thing they needed was B.J. Blazkowicz to come sniffing around…

LEVEL GUIDE:

Level 1 Felsendampf Geheimtunnel

When you arrive at an abandoned house near the Reichstag, you find the entrance to a tunnel leading to the cellars of the Reichstag. You must enter the eerie, damp, dark tunnel in order to get inside the cellars of the Reichstag.

Levels 2-3 Reichstag Cellars

These cellars are lightly guarded by SS and Hitlerjugend. Be careful not to get lost in the many pilestocking-areas. They may seem to be exact the same;

Levels 4-6 Lobby/Main halls

Via the elevator you get inside the Reichstag Lobby. Finally a chance to see what’s still left of the once beautiful chapel. Be warned – besides Nazi architecture there are also various SS, HitlerJugend and Gestapo waiting for you!

Levels 7-10: NSDAP Conference Floors

This is the most high-class area of the Reichstag. On these floors Hitler conferenced with his party, the NSDAP. It is now a place where the officers hide. These levels have as common enemies the quick and speedy Gestapo officers, so be warned to stay covered!

Level 11: Felsendampf Geheimtunnel 2

Back in the tunnel. Hitler didn’t seem to be in the Reichstag, so it’s time to turn in the direction you couldn’t access on forehand: the tunnel part leading to the Führungbunker. This part of the tunnel is guarded by various SS and HitlerJugend.

This tunnel seems just like the original tunnel backwards, but when you get to the part where you couldn’t enter on first hand, it’ll get harder and uneasier to follow. After all, Uncle Adolf doesn’t want any unwelcome visitors, does he?

Level 12: The Führerbunker

This is it — Here you’ll face the Fuhrer himself. But before you can get to him, you’ll have to navigate through the bunker, which is guarded by many SS and Gestapo. Be prepared — you’re in for the fight of your life.

Architectal Notice: This level is made upon an actual blueprint of the Führerbunker. Believe it or not, it was made from a blueprint from a book about the Second World War. So be sure to visit a place that did existed — all right all right, it looked different, but the architecture was the same in World War II.

Levels 13-15: Old Reichstag

This part of the Reichstag was the old chansellor’s conference area. Here, 20 meters below the fundaments of the Reichstag, the secret conferences between the chansellor and the generals were held back in World War I. Today it’s guarded by a few of the Allied Forces’ “turncoats”: deserters now on the Axis’ side.

Level 16: Horst Grosse’s Den

Originally the old chansellor’s dressing room, this dark and eerie place is now ruled by Horst Grosse, close friend of the Fuhrer and companion of Heinrich Jäger. His domain is that where you’ll find out where Heinrich Jäger is hiding.

Levels 17-19: Reichstag Upper Floors

These floors will eventually lead you to the roof, where Heinrich Jäger is waiting for you. Be warned — These are the most heavy guarded floors of the entire Reichstag.

Level 20: Reichstag Roof

All right now, it’s time to salute Mr. Jackson on the military way — swapping some lead into his head. Beat this guy and your mission is complete.

Here’s some shots of the current framework for the game. (don’t look at the level numbers, they’re just concept maps). The status bar was designed by Steve Walley (AReyeP). BJ’s sleeves and the Reichswehr-enemy (replaces the Mutant) are drawn by Tris. The rock texture (of level 5) was designed by Eric Vaughn.

Again, anyone who’d like to help out, please do so. Thanks.

Tris.
