2000

30th December 2000: Wolfenstein: Iron Addition released
Lane Lawson has released ‘Wolfenstein: Iron Addition’. It has around 20 new levels (most of the first 2 episodes, and a few on the third one). There are also many graphics, sounds and source code changes. There’s a lot of pushwalls too! All files are included. Upcoming sets by Lane include Stalin’s Reign and Gothenstein.

30th December 2000: Newmaps posted
I recently dug out a 1992 shareware set called ‘Newmaps’. There are ten new levels, and there’s some good ideas but it’s really only for those who want to play/collect every set. It’s version 1.0, but all files are included in the zip. I added a cheat file (use CTRL/TAB/ENTER to initialize) as some levels are quite difficult to get out of.

30th December 2000: Operation Uberfaust released
Operation Uberfaust is a new scenario for the Mac by Juan J. Alva. The original version had a minor bug (a pushwall that didn’t work) but this one has that fixed.

30th December 2000: The Final Solution site goes online
Tris’s new site The Final Solution is now online. It’s well designed and has many sections, including news, source code info, features and links etc. There’s a lot of info on Tris’s new set, also called TFS (which is mentioned below).

There’s more pics and info on the project at The Wolf 3D Mansion.

17th December 2000: Spear page updated
I updated my Spear page. For those who would like to know more about the origins and conditions of the Spear… there’s an article by grailknight2001. Look for the link The Seven Conditions That Are Key. It sounds heavy, and it is!! And if you’re still interested after that, there’s a Yahoo Club at KNIGHTS IN QUEST OF THE GRAIL.

17th December 2000: Einmacht update
Greg’s final version of his ‘Einmacht’ shareware set will be released soon. There’ll be more news posted here as soon as I get it.

9th December 2000: A Madman’s Dream released
John Bucksnort has released ‘A Madman’s Dream’. There are ten new levels, plus many new graphics, sounds and source code changes. A very challenging and well designed set. All files are included.

9th December 2000: Project Holleregen pics
The upcoming set ‘Project Holleregen’ by Eric Vaughn is progressing well, and some pics have now been released. The title screen is shown opposite. More pics here.

9th December 2000: E-mail from Tris
Tris sent me this email…

Hi Brian, here’s an announcement…

Dear members of the Wolfenstein 3D Community, when I started my club, Tris’s Coding Alliance, a while ago, people visited often. After a fight between me and another member, it seems many people left the club( they didn’t remove their names from the list, but simply don’t visit again). That’s rather sad, ’cause I hoped to get more members and more understanding of the source code among the people in the Wolfenstein Community (phew, I’m sounding like a 70-year-old filosoph, eh?). So people, please come back to my club. There won’t be any more fights, that’s a promise.

Tris.

Tris’s club is at Tris’s Coding Alliance.

9th December 2000: Extras page updated
I updated my Extras
page with a new section on the early 80’s Apple II program Castle Wolfenstein. Here’s a link to a page with info on one of it’s sequels Castle Smurfenstein Home Page.

9th December 2000: Ben Blaufarb’s site new URL
Ben Blaufarb’s site has moved to Planet Quake, and it’s now called DLA ONE. There’s a page dedicated to Tekkoudan, and there’s other sections for Ben’s earlier sets.

3rd December 2000: Hell Fire pics
James (Jimboages) released some pics from his ‘Hell Fire’ project. James sent me to see the whole set.

3rd December 2000: kicken_kyle needs help
The following message by kicken_kyle was posted on The Wolfenstein 3D Fan Club

I’m making an add-on using for the Spear of Destiny registered version. I need people to make maps. Don’t worry, your name will be posted in the add-on. I just need maps I can import using floedit. Heres the guidelines:

  • It’s set in bj’s mansion, so no nazi symbols, just plain walls like grey stone walls, or brown marble walls.
  • You must have already made an add-on.
  • Post here (The Wolfenstein 3D Fan Club) for validation. Post the name of the most popular add-on you have made, specify how many levels you want to make (max is 5), and anything else you find important.
  • I will post a reply saying yes or no. If yes, I will assign you to the levels.
  • After your maps are made, send ’em to me.

24th November 2000: Spear of Destiny Fan Club award
This month’s SPEAR OF DESTINY FAN CLUB

John Bucksnort’s next set will be ‘A Madman’s Dream’. It will be released within 2 weeks. Meanwhile, John has sent me a set of pics

24th November 2000: David Gebler update
Here’s a message from David Gebler that he posted on The Wolfenstein 3D Fan Club

Gebweb.co.uk has been fully re-designed and is now up and running at http://www.gebweb.co.uk – it is only a test version, so not all sections are currently up and running. Expect full functionality in the next month. You can apply for webspace there, too. We will soon be adding chat and message board functions.

-Dave.

24th November 2000: Jagdpanther’s Wolfenstein Site
OK folks, here’s a new Wolf 3D site. It’s called Jagdpanther’s Wolfenstein Site.
There’s news, add-ons, projects info and links. There’s also a set of good pics from the forthcoming add-on Projekt Wolf. And here’s the site banner…

24th November 2000: Harry Senior’s Wolfenstein 3D site
Yet another new site is Wolfenstein 3D by Harry Sr. This one is still under construction but already has a lot there. There’s a nicely designed front page and an add-ons section listing all of Harry’s sets.

19th November 2000: New domain for possible future uploads
My Easyspace webspace is now nearly full so I’ve gotten another one at http://www.wolfenstein3d.co.uk. At present, there’s just a copy of my Home Page, but I intend to replace it with something Wolf 3D related later. Any ideas from anyone ??

16th November 2000: Guystein 2 updated
‘Guystein 2’ has been updated. There are now 30 new levels on episodes 1, 3 and 5, but I haven’t checked all these out yet. (Guy Brys tells me there could still be some bugs in the set). More news on this when I’ve played it all, but if you want to try it out – it’s at Guy’s Home Page.

16th November 2000: Escape from the Labyrinth updated
Jordan Buck has released a new beta version of his ‘Escape from the Labyrinth’ set. There are now 18 completed levels, plus some graphics and many source code changes. All files are now included in the zip. Jordan hopes to release a final version in a few months but this could be delayed.

16th November 2000: Esplanaden Wolfenstein 3D
Here’s a link for Mac fans that I came across by chance. There’s stacks of add-ons and other Wolfenstein 3D related files. It’s at Esplanaden Wolfenstein 3D.

13th November 2000: Evil in Iron – DOOM graphics released
John Bucksnort has released his ‘Evil in Iron’ set with Doom graphics. I just made a set of pics – one of them is shown below. The set is available from John’s Page too at John Bucksnort Wolf 3D Page.

11th November 2000: Wolfendoom released
Wolfendoom is a sixty level set sent in by AReyeP. (Steve tells me it’s pronounced as RIP). All levels are new and very well designed. There’s also a whole bunch of new graphics and sounds. All files are included in the zip, including some lengthy text files which have a lot of info on the set. Here’s a pic from episode two…

9th November 2000: The Final Solution update
Here’s an email from Tris…

Hi Brian, Here’s a small (small?) update on The Final Solution.

Yeah, it’s been a while, but here it is…

The game’s engine is rather complete, but some extras still need to be added. I’d like to know if anyone could help me out with these. I don’t have the knowledge for it.

I still need:

  • A heartbeat sound that plays infinite when the player’s health is 40% or less
  • A second unlocked door with a texture from -74 ( I use MapEdit 8.0, so if you also know how to set it up in there???)
  • Occasionally jamming of the chaingun
  • When you’re out of ammo, you can still select the weapons, but you hear a “click”(digitized sound I guess)

If anyone could help me with this, MAIL ME! Tris@yahoo.com

The game’s levels are now 80% complete. That is, all level layouts are complete, but some still need some treasure, ammo, enemies, etc.

See you around,

Tris.

9th November 2000: A Madman’s Dream announced
John Bucksnort sent me a title screen for his latest project ‘A Madman’s Dream’. The set will have ten new levels. Graphics, sounds and source code will be similar to those in Tobruk, but with a few surprises.

9th November 2000: Death Waits updated
Harry Senior tells me there’s a bug on the fifth level of his ‘Death Waits’ set. Harry sends his apologies and this update, which will put things right.

9th November 2000: Eat at Joe’s released
‘Eat at Joe’s’ has been a long time coming but there’s now a new ten level download for this set at Eat at Joe’s. There’s lots of graphics, sounds and source code changes. (Many of the actors are cartoon-like). This set requires the original Wolf3D 60 level set as some of the files have been deliberately left out (copyright reasons, I guess).

4th November 2000: David Gebler update
Here’s a message from David Gebler…

Biokrieg’s engine has been completed for a long time, but the problem is, I don’t really have the time to design the remaining 27 levels that need to be done before it can be released. There must be someone out there who can lend a hand towards getting Biokrieg complete – so if anyone at all is interested in helping, please e-mail smooth_nite@hotmail.com – Thanks.

-David Gebler.

4th November 2000: Nazi’s Death Valley released
Just arrived is this new set for the Spear demo. It’s by Guillermo Buteler and is called ‘Nazi’s Death Valley’. Both levels are new, and all files are included.

4th November 2000: Wolfenstein Collection released
‘Wolfenstein Collection’ is a new 30 level set for Wolfenstein 3D. It’s by MCS, who comes from Holland, and has many new sounds, graphics, music, and title screen. The cheats have been changed in this set (the ILM command is now MCS). MCS has spent more than 300 hours on this set, and this is shown in the quality of the levels.

From what I’ve played, this set would particularly suit those who prefer the original game, especially in the first 3 levels. However, there are many surprises and those who like new graphics and source code changes will also find something here.

The earlier version of this game (before 11/04/00) had a bug. There’s a small patch which will put this right.

4th November 2000: Poet’s Wolfenstein 3-D Page new banner
Paal Olstad’s page has a new banner. Here it is…

20th October 2000: David Gebler update
Here’s news from David Gebler…

There are serveral things I have to say in this message, so read carefully everyone. The first thing, is that the more observant of you may have noticed that the new Gebweb.co.uk Network has still not been uploaded, and that Wolfenstein 3D Insanity has not been updated in a while. This is because I am currently involved in the development of an exciting new product for authors. It’s called E-Book Writer, and enables authors to write entire books and sell them without any publication costs at all. So if you’re a first time author, you can still sell your work in our new file format, which we’ve called Standard E-Book Format. This isn’t an advert, but as a side issue, if you’re interested in beta-testing or purchasing a copy of this product, please e-mail beta@gebweb.co.uk and let us know. Note that only a maximum of five people will be required to beta-test.

My Wolfenstein 3D TC, Biokrieg, is nearly finished, but I could really do with a hand from someone who’s good at designing levels. Please e-mail smooth_nite@hotmail.com if you’re interested.

That’s all for now. Until next time, bye everyone!

-David Gebler

John Bucksnort’s main Wolf3D/Spear Page now has a new url. It’s at http://www.jbucksnort.com.

20th October 2000: Adam’s Wolfenstein 3D Site removed
Adam’s Wolfenstein 3D site has been deleted. It seems there was a disagreement between Adam and Kenny Riley. Anyways, Kenny asked me to post the exchange of emails. You can see it here.

Here’s the exchange of emails between Adam and Kenny concerning the deletion of Adam’s site…

Brian, I’m sure you’ve seen the site that says I destroyed his site. Well I have something you can make into a text file and put it on you news page for the explanation why this guy is full of shit. Anyway here’s the message:

Okay this guy named Adam had a wolf site and he ripped my whole source code section off so I e-mailed him and this is the e-mail:

“Adam,

I went to your page today and I saw your source code section. You have some tutorials that I wrote and they are a rip off of mine that you altered. All you had to do was e-mail me and ask but you didn’t do that. Now since you just took it without asking take my tutorials off of your page and no don’t ask if you can use them because the answer is no. Be creative and make your own stuff.

-Kenny”

Okay he replied with:

“The decision was made earlier this morning to delete my internet site. This was a decision partly due to the email you sent me and due to a decision of my friends at school. My site was never meant to be a ‘proper’ wolfenstein site it was only meant to be an experiment with my skills on frontpage 98. I only put a bit of the source code section on my site and I think you should also tell the other people that steal your tutorials to get them of their site as well. The whole of the web site should be gone by 12:00am. You seemed to be a person who wouldn’t mind if I used some of your tutorials, Sorry for any inconvienience and i think you did the right thing by telling me. I provided a link on my site but maybe that wasn’t enough”

Okay his site is now offline, on the bottom of his page it said “Kindly ripped from the Wolf3D Mansion” anyways here’s the link to his page:

http://members.dencity.com/wolfenstein3d/

He says I destroyed his site. That is a total lie, I told him to take off my tutorials so this guy does not know

What he’s talking about.

-Kenny

Thanks for puttin this on your news page, I want to clear this up.

12th September 2000: David Gebler update
Here’s news from David Gebler…

  • OK, this news doesn’t JUST concern Wolf3D fans, but it IS relevant to Wolf3D. The Gebweb.co.uk Network is being TOTALLY re-done. The new site will look a lot better, have a search engine to search the web, and loads of new sites on it, including Wolf3D Insanity. There will also be an online weekly magazine about computers, programming, and games, called PC Voltage. More news about all that soon.
  • Now the Wolf3D part: For a start, anyone is welcome (at this time, anyhow) to host their Wolf3D website on Gebweb.co.uk – with UNLIMITED webspace. This will benefit most smaller sites, because with the content on the new Gebweb.co.uk Network, it has been estimated that we could receive (within a few months) up to 5000 (yes, five thousand) visitors a day, meaning smaller Wolf sites will get a LOT more hits every day. Also, Project: Biokrieg is nearly ready. It should be released in less than one month. That’s all for now. Contact me at the address below if you want to know more about anything.

9th September 2000: Wolfenstein 3D MIDI music
Here’s a message from Tris…

“Hey Brian. I received an email from Martin Fernandez (the author of WOLFMUS), in which he answers my question of creating MIDI versions of the Wolfenstein 3D Music Cues. He sent me the following info. If anyone knows how to do this, let him/her contact me. Thanks. Tris.”

Martin Fernandez replies…

“Hello, Well, I’m another big fan of Wolf3d. It’s great to see that you liked the player! My initial project was to convert all the musics to MIDI. In order to fully understand the structure of the music tracks, I decided to build a music player. So now I know what every byte-sequence in the tracks mean. Unfortunately, MIDI conversion is harder to accomplish.

I started writing a converter and managed a partial translation of a couple of tracks. But I had other real-life matters to attend to and temporarily abandoned it. Basically, you have to map Adlib frequencies to notes. It can be done (and I did, but each track is a separate problem to handle). Then you have to map ‘volume’ -> MIDI velocity. Again, it can be done, but I stopped working at that point. And don’t forget the ‘sound textures’, matching Adlib voices to MIDI instruments; and drum tracks. Even then, most of the songs have effects like vibrato, slides and such. And on the MIDI world it is again possible to achieve such effects. But you need a very intelligent program to successfully detect and convert stuff like that. And what I have so far is not a real smart piece of code, just basic translation. Anyway, to do it properly, human supervision is required.

What can I say? It is possible to create an automatic converter, and you would have to manually supervise and re-arrange every track in order to get something similar to the original. I have seen four or five Wolf MIDI’s out there, some are perfect translations and I keep wondering where did they come from (Apogee itself?). But someone has to write such a program.

If you want to/have some programming knowledge, I can help you with what I already know. Else… Maybe sometime in the future I get motivated again and finish the conversion. Maybe someone else did something similar with other games and can provide the extra effort.

Why not try contacting the guys at HYPERLINK. They converted lots of Adlib songs from LucasArts games and are experts on the subject? Then again, maybe they grew tired of doing so. If they are willing to help and need some info on the track structure, let them contact me. If all of the above fails, you can still learn how to program it (I can help you out a bit) and do it yourself! That’s how most utilities get born.

Well? Tell me about it. See you, Martin Fernandez”

5th September 2000: The Final Solution update
Here’s a whole bunch of news from Tris…

The Final Solution gets better and better. I’ve put a contest on my page where you can win the BETA version 1.4c of TFS 3D. You have to translate a Dutch sentence (Dutch people may not involve the contest, though… then it wouldn’t be a contest).

I also posted a new tutorial for the cheaters. It tells you how to disable the damn GOOBERS and Shift-Alt-Backspace code. All you have to do is alter 1 small line. Go check it out at my website!

Tris.

First thing, guys, is that Project: Biokrieg will be delayed, because I went and accidently wrote over the entire project’s source code with the original game code. This will delay beta testing by about 2 weeks. Sorry.

The second thing is, my site’s source code page Wolfenstein 3D Insanity has been majorly updated, and now includes what I believe is the biggest set of tutorials on the web. I’ll try and add more tutorials every week, so it will soon be your one-stop source for editing Wolf3D! Check it out!

7th August 2000: The Final Solution update
I received this email today concerning a forthcoming add-on ‘The Final Solution’…

Dear Mr. Lowe,

I’m Tris, 14 years old, fond of all kinds of shooters (except for Quake. I really HATE Quake…), but especially like Wolfenstein 3-D and Spear of Destiny.

I am programming the Source Code for Wolfenstein 3-D pretty well and found out a lot of cool stuff (which will be told on my website soon).

For a year now, I’ve been busy with an add-on for Wolfenstein 3-D. It’s called The Final Solution, concludes 22 levels (20 regular, 2 secret, seamless level flow) and has a whole load of new graphics and sounds, of which 80+ graphics are made by myself. No, not crappy walls with dumb paintings on them, but serious walls. For example, the hospital graphics are made by me. It took a week to get them right.

I had inspiration from a book concerning a military hospital in Dresden during the 2nd World War. I also re-drew the UberMutant.

In most add-ons, he (or it, what should I say?) looks bad with the Spear palette still on it (I mean that light purple color on the green part of his suit). I thought that it would be nice to make all colors match on his suit. So I made them match. You can’t see that the Spear palette was there, I worked those stripes away perfectly.

For some changes to the source code, read on.

  • Read This! and End Text altered (had to rewrite WL_TEXT.C completely)
  • Seamless level flow (thanks to Brian Rowan)
  • Ratio reporting on every level (except for the 4 Boss levels)
  • Dogs turned into guards, they shoot instead of biting now.
  • Bosses from Spear (like Ubermutant) are as strong as they were in SOD.

The game takes place in Autumn 1942. A scientist called Dr. Jurgen Schabbs has found a way to resurrect dead soldiers. Your mission as B.J. Blazcowickz is to stop Schabbs and his already undead.

The whole story, which exists of 9 Read This! pages, will come along with the full version, which should be completed within 2 months.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you’ll reply.

  • Seamless level progression!
  • New weapons!
  • New Enemies!
  • Two New Keys!

Luke Strauman, the creator of Operation Buzzbomb, emailed me yesterday. Seems he was unaware until recently of the bad publicity surrounding the set. Just to put the record straight, he said he did have permission to use graphics from the WolfenDOOM sets. He didn’t copy them from Nate’s BWII – which was the main criticism – it’s just that Nate’s set came out first.

Anyways, Luke’s got a new set coming out soon. It’s called Project Esiam and there’s a set of pics available. Take a look, I doubt if anyone can accuse him of stealing graphics this time!

My commiserations to Dave, who worked so hard to get this club to be the success that it was. Nate Smith has set up Wolfenstein 3D Fan Club in it’s place. Thanks Nate, hope this goes well.

15th January 2000: The Wolf 3D and Quake Club update
The Wolf 3D and Quake Club has a new logo. Thomas Hubert, the club founder, tells me that the original one was looking a little out of date. Here it is…

15th January 2000: Mortal Kombat update
By chance, I discovered a set of graphics called ‘Mortal Kombat’ for the Wolfenstein 3D full version. They date from 1992!!! The blue SS and undead guards have been totally changed (apart from the sounds), and so have most of the bosses. Some walls and objects have been changed too, particularly the wall portraits. As there were no new levels, I added those from my ‘WolfBel2’ set. Here’s a screenshot.

15th January 2000: Best Page for Wolfenstein 3D awards
Thomas Hubert announced his awards for Best Page for Wolfenstein 3D. Here are the results:

  • 1: Mr Lowes Wolf3d page- although it does not look as pretty as some other pages, no other sites have as many add-ons or links.
  • 2: BJ’s Hide Out- for sure the best looking wolf page on the net, it would have got 1st, but it has barely any info, only 5 add-ons, and old links.
  • 3: The Wolf3d Bunker- so much great info on the source code! I don’t think you can get that much info any place else.
  • Honourable Mention: Spifferaneous Wolf3-D Empire- Spiff went through a lot, his first page was taken down, his doom page was taken down as well, and now he has this. It is good. And here it gets an award.

8th January 2000: Wolfenstein in Sweden reuploaded
I posted ‘Wolfenstein in Sweden’. This is shareware and has 4 different map sets with one modified graphics set. The site this was on has disappeared.

8th January 2000: The Sliver URL change
The sliver now has his own domain, and his page has been transferred to it. He is currently working on a new add-ons section. He also announced his Site of the Month award for January, and this time it was given to the Wolfenstein 3-D Domain. Well deserved!

1st January 2000: Return to Wolfenstein released
Another new year. Here’s hoping it goes well for everyone. During the week, Kurt released his new TC ‘Return to Wolfenstein’. There are twenty new levels, plus some graphics and source code changes.
